Reflux Cough Can Be Easily Misdiagnosed

If You Have Reflux, Consider it as a Possible Cause For Cough
If you go to the doctor complaining of a chronic cough, you
may end up undergoing a series of expensive and difficult tests along with time consuming visits to the physician's
office, hospitals, and labs. Reflux Cough has
often been misdiagnosed as lung disease, allergies, post nasal drip, and emphysema. So be sure your
doctor eliminates it as a possible cause before he embarks on other exams and tests.
Reflux Cough is a part of the symptoms of GERD
that results from the esophagus being irritated by the stomach acids and contents encroaching past the LES (Lower
Esophageal Sphincter). It is a natural reflex the body exerts in order to clear food or irritants from the
esophagus.
Acid Reflux Cough Is Very
Common
It is estimated that about 25% of all chronic
cough is caused by gastrointestinal problems, or GERD. There have been many scientific tests conducted to determine
what the triggers are and when they prompt the reflux cough. Surprisingly, many people reported the symptom
occuring before they had even engaged in eating. It seems that the brain secrets salivas and hormones in response
to an anticipated action. This can explain common sayings such as; "just the thought of spicy food gives me
heartburn!"
Some people with acid reflux
do not have reflux cough, but
everyone with reflux cough has acid reflux. So what causes this in
some, but not in others?
It has been commonly accepted that reflux cough
is caused by the aspiration (or inhalation) of stomach acids and toxins, and some people, more than others, are prone to this problem. It may be because different people have
different tolerance levels as to the volume of food that can be accomodated in the stomach before encroachment into
the esophagus occurs. But this is not accepted as a broad brush answer, because it does not explain every
situation. Regardless, with Heartburn No More, you can find relief from this uncomfortable and potentially dangerous
condition.
Tests of 2 control groups conducted in
Australia, involved instilling low levels of acid into the Lower Esophageal Sphicters
(LES) of one group, while they placed a placebo saline solution into the LES of
patients of another group. The group recieving the acid have definite observable reactions, however the
placebo group also had a considerable number of reactions resulting in cough. This suggests that all
patients suffering from reflex cough, have abnormally sensitive cough receptors which could be triggered
psychologically as well as chemically.
Hope on the Scientific Horizon
A substantial advancement in the area of
treating chronic cough (including reflux cough) was made in the field of speech language pathology. Another
Australian study, concluded that chronic cough that is resistant to medical treatment, responded favorably to a
form of speech therapy. The study demonstrated the futility of excessive coughing which was counterproductive and
harmful, and that supressing a coughing was actually beneficial. The speech therapy centered
around relieving the burden on the larnyx by using hydration, breathing exercises, and psychological factors
that would trigger the cough receptors.
