Hertburn Home Remedies
Take The "errr..." Out Of gERd

People have been experiencing stomach ailments
long before modern medicine created the little purple pill. Heartburn home remedies have been tried and tested
for millenniums. But many traditional herbal remedies have been set aside as old wives tales after losing of
credibility when they are associated with witch doctors prancing around shaking rattles and uttering
magic spells.
We place a lot of trust in modern science and
medicine today, and many people see no reason to believe that ancient cultures could possibly have any
valuable knowledge about medicinal remedies. On the other hand, many see the success of natural herbal healing in
places like the Far East, and they abandon what they view as a profit driven, drug-oriented medical system for
something more natural.
But the answer does not lie in one extreme or
the other. One thing all people need to understand is that many modern medicines use several extracts from natural
products that have been well known to be effective treatments for ages. We are indeed fortunate to have modern
science to assist us in using these safely, because just like prescription drugs, not all herbs are beneficial to
all people.
When considering the use of any herbal
remedies, it is very important to consult your doctor. Don’t ‘throw the baby out with the bath water,” so to speak.
Use both medical science, and nature’s best remedies to assist you in all things.
Some Useful
Home Remedies For Acid Reflux
-
Ginger – This fairly safe and widely
available herb has been used for thousands of years for all types of stomach ailments in many
cultures. It is a very popular remedy for pregnancy related nausea. I personally found out about
this from an Indian Hindu immigrant whom I worked with. It helped me dispel excessive gas and
bloating.
-
Charcoal – This remedy has
been widely accepted by modern health professionals, and can be found at your local health store or
online in capsule form.
-
Chamomile – This herb is a
popular tea and is known for its relaxing effects which also benefit the digestive system. It can
relieve gas and bloating cramps, but it is not without danger to some. Consult your doctor if you take
blood thinners or sedatives. Some people have adverse affects which can be counter-productive to the
intended results.
-
Licorice – This herb is
wonderful for reducing inflammation in the esophagus caused by GERD, and can be helpful in treating the
Acid Reflux cough and throat irritation. It is best taken in a form that allows it to come in contact
with the esophageal tissues, so a pill or tablet form is not the best method. There are teas or
chewable tablets available. However, be advised that Licorice can increase blood pressure, and being
that 1 in 3 people have high blood pressure, you should most definitely consult your doctor before
using this.
-
Aloe Vera – This plant has
been used widely for many different remedies. Some of the oldest known uses date back to ancient Egypt
more than 3,000 years ago. The gel from the leaves has been used to treat burns and cuts and to promote
healthy skin in general. It is still used today in hundreds of skin and body products. But the juice
extracted from the leaves can also be an effective GERD treatment and for other ailment such as IBS and
constipation. The juice is mixed into tea or a drink, and it helps sooth and relax the esophagus and
digestive tract.
-
Slippery Elm – The ingredients
of this herb are extracted from tree bark and it coats the lining of the esophagus making it a great
herb for soothing the throat. It is best used in tea or lozenge forms because like licorice, it needs
to actually come in contact with the esophagus in order to be effective.
Not So Good Herbs For GERD
While relaxation of the digestive tract is generally what makes a lot of
these herbs so effective, there is a muscle called the LES (Lower Esophageal Sphincter), which keeps the stomach
acids from entering the esophagus. This muscle needs to remain tight, and there are certain substances and herbs
which can relax this muscle making GERD worse. Peppermint and Spearmint are among these and you would be wise to
pass on that after dinner mint.
